How to Choose a Ski Instructor in Val d’Isère & Tignes

October 8, 2026 · 3 min read

On a ski area as large as Val d’Isère–Tignes, the qualification is only the starting point. What decides whether a lesson works is the fit between you and the person teaching you: their style, their language, and their knowledge of the terrain.

Start with the qualification

In France, teaching skiing for money requires the Diplôme d’État or a recognised equivalent. Everyone we work with holds one. It is the baseline, not what sets a good instructor apart.

Be clear about what you want

“Improve my skiing” can mean very different things: carving cleaner turns on piste, getting comfortable in steeper terrain, trying off-piste for the first time, or simply skiing with the family without anyone being left behind. The more precisely you describe the goal, the easier it is to find the right person.

Think about the person, not just the level

Two instructors with the same diploma can teach very differently. Some are patient and technical, others energetic and fast-moving. Some are happier with nervous beginners, others with strong skiers who want to be pushed. Language matters too: a technical explanation lands better in your own language.

Choose the lesson format that suits you

Private ski lessons give you the instructor’s full attention and a programme built around you, at your pace. They suit improving technique, nervous skiers, young children and families with mixed levels, where a group would have to follow its slowest or fastest member.

Look for experience of the terrain

Val d’Isère and Tignes have very different slopes, and conditions change daily. An instructor who has skied here for years knows which terrain suits your level on the day and where the snow is best. That experience does more than improve your skiing. It takes you to places most visitors never find: quiet corners, the best viewpoints, the spots for your photos. Technique is only part of a good week on skis. The rest is knowing where to take you.

How we do it

After 26 years on these slopes, we built our service around one question. You tell us your level, your goals, your languages and who will be skiing. From our extensive network of experienced instructors and local mountain guides, we put forward the people best suited to you, and you choose. We usually reply within 24 hours.
